This is a sample of the email that we sent out to all our family and friends to participate in the creation of a time capsule for Baby Lederer

Dear Friends and Family

Our little one is truly blessed to have all of you in his life, and we would like him to know how anticipated his arrival is, we would love you to participate in this momentous occasion in any way you can.

We’re compiling a time capsule for our little baby as a register / memory of his date of birth. In order to do this we need everyone’s help from across the world . . .

Here’s what we’re planning to do. The time capsule will comprise newspapers, interesting paraphernalia and letters stamped and date marked in various cities around the globe posted to Baby Lederer on the date of his birth. All items listed below, and some others that I’m collecting, will be sealed in the time capsule and will only be opened when Baby turns twenty-one. Hopefully we can all get together on that occasion and witness the opening of the capsule!

Could I therefore please request that each of you do the following activities on the big day. I will SMS or email you all once Baby is born, so that Project Baby Lederer Time Capsule can be implemented!

Newspapers and other information:

Please buy the following news papers on the day, and post or give them to me (depending on your proximity).

  • Oliver, Gillian, Ryan and Kirsten: Newspapers from the USA, particularly a Wall Street Journal and New York Times (if those are available in Minneapolis), and a few of the local Minnesota papers like the Star Tribune and St Paul Pioneer Press
  • Birgitt: The Cape Argus, the Independent and Die Burger (yes, an Afrikaans newspaper).
  • Ruan and Maryke: Business Day
  • Nadene: The Star
  • Cornel: The Sowetan (yes, please ‘steal’ the one at reception)
  • Nina and Jaco: A Rapport and Beeld
  • Sharon and Marc: Some Australian news papers (this may be a little difficult as the day may already be over for you once you get the announcement). We were thinking along the lines of the Herald Sun and The Australian;
  • Sunette and Pieter: The New Zealand Herald. Like Marc and Sharon above, the sun may already have set on the day, so the following morning’s edition will do just fine.
  • Roger and Terry: The Financial Times (the one on salmon coloured paper), a Daily Mirror and The Times.
  • Tante Leni & Onkel Adolf: Backnanger Kreiszeitung & Die Welt
  • Dieter, Elfi & Sonja: Stuttgarter, Berliner Morgenpost & Die Zeit
  • Garth: JSE statistics (volumes, values, indicators, biggest movers, biggest gains and losses, etc.)
  • Bev, Claire & Matt: Forex rates of the day (Bev, this is just up your street), top Google searches for the day (Claire, you’re it), and Matt, especially for you, shows on in Jo’burg that evening, and your review of any of them—those you’ve seen
  • James and Joleen: Top 8 @ 8 on Highveld and Traffic Joke of the Day
  • Bretta: Amazon’s Bestsellers for the day (although it’s updated hourly, any snapshot during the day will do fine).

Baby Lederer’s Cousins to be:

A special request to Baby Lederer’s five cousins (in order of age)—Shannon, Ryan, Ryan, Kirsten and Tamsin:

  • Cousin’s advice for the future
  • Cousin’s joke of the day
  • Cousin’s predictions for 2029—how do you see the future
  • Your special wish for your Baby cousin

Letters:

Could you all also please post a letter from which ever city you’re in when Baby Lederer makes his grand entrance (even if you’re in Jo’burg!). If possible, use genuine stamps; however, the new bar-coded post office stickers are also cool. Please write a short paragraph to the future, or alternatively put anything of interest in it, such as:

  • a credit card voucher,
  • a till slip,
  • a sweet wrapper,
  • parking ticket / voucher,
  • restaurant bill,
  • bus ticket or train ticket stub,
  • disused / non-winning l o t t e r y ticket or scratch card,
  • or anything from that day that you want recorded in the time capsule.

Slips and bills are cool, as they will capture the prices of items. Someone please fill up with petrol and get a slip – this will be really cool.

I suggest have the letter & envelope pre-prepared, with only having to seal it on the day and post it.

None of the letters will be opened on receipt, but will be placed in the time capsule to be opened once the time capsule is opened.

Please address the letters to Baby Lederer; our postal address is at the bottom of this email. Remember, these letters will only be opened in 21 years!!

TV News & TV Programmes:

In addition to above, we’d also like certain news broadcasts video taped.

  • Ruan & Maryke: eNews Prime Time on eTV at 19:00
  • Robin & Di: News @ 7 on SABC3 at 19:00
  • Anyone: anything that’s news worthy on the day that you feel should be taped, such as a sporting event, etc.

General:

Everyone, please collect & send anything that you think should go into the time capsule.

Logistics:

Once Baby Lederer is born, and all has settled to a mild panic, I’ll make contact with all of you to get the ‘bigger’ items, such as the new papers and videos, or anything else that you thought should go into the time capsule.

A BIG THANK YOU

Lastly, a big thank for all your help to collect these goodies, and for participating in our memento gathering exercise.

Lynn, Norwin and Baby
