Monday saw the start of mid-term break, but sadly I didn’t get to enjoy it initially. I was really sick, and although Mommy arranged playgroup for me, I couldn’t go. To make matters worse, Mommy was also very ill with gastro, so we kept each other company throughout the day. By late afternoon Mom and I were writhing in pain, so we summoned Daddy to urgently bring us meds.

Tuesday Mommy was still very sick, so Granny was called to help out for the day. By Wednesday is was feeling better, but not Mommy, so Granny came to look after me again. Mommy also had a dentist’s appointment, and despite being so sick, she still braved it.

In the morning before Daddy had to leave for work I’d managed to convince him to teach me to play Zingo. It was one of my birthday presents from Sunday’s Pirate Happy Birthday party, but because I’d been so under the weather, I hadn’t felt up to playing it yet. After Daddy read the instructions and explained them to me, we were deep into the game. I loved it, and we played so many games I’m sure Daddy ended up being late for work.

By Thursday we were both Mom and I were feeling much better, so we went to Smudge for the afternoon where we met with Claudi and Ryan. It was such a stunning afternoon, and so wonderful to get out of the house. Mommy stocked up on art supplies and stickers.

Daddy took leave on Friday – we were going on a mini-holiday to Sterkfontein Dam in the Drakensberg. Ryan and his folks had invited us to join them for the weekend. I could hardly wait. I was hardly awake on Firday morning and I was already asking when we were leaving, and ‘are we there yet’. After an uneventful drive we arrived in the mountains and we drove through undulating hills on the tiniest road imaginable. Before long we arrived at Qwantani resort, and as we pulled up to our chalet Ryan came bounding out shouting hellos.

After admiring the deep blue dam below us, and exploring our immediate surroundings, we discovered a tunnel that went under the road to our chalet – well that was enough to keep us busy for the entire weekend. Ryan and I loved exploring and crawling through the tunnel. After we stormed about on our bikes as we appreciated the stunning sunset behind the mountains. I must say, playing in the higher altitude with thin air was hard work, and after dinner we hardly spent anytime socialising around the fire and headed off straight to bed.

Saturday morning we awoke to find an Angry Bird (aka an ostrich) at our lounge window, practically peeking in. Ryan and I were desperate to go to the play area, but out folks refused to leave the chalet until the ostrich had wandered off out of sight. We eventually got to the jungle gyms and had an excellent play and swing. I nodded off to sleep, but Mommy held me sheltered from the icy wind while Ryan carried on playing. Did I mention it was freezing cold?!

In the afternoon I taught Ryan how to play Mario Kart Wii and Zingo. It’s an awesome game – every family must have it! In the afternoon Ryan and I and our Mommies went for a long walk while Daddy and Paul made a braai and cooked the meat. We had a stunning dinner together. I felt exhausted so Ryan and I lay in bed watching some DVDs – I promptly fell asleep!

We woke up Sunday morning to discover it had rained overnight making the day really cold. But this stop us from more play – this time we spent the morning playing miniature golf at the resort, and afterwards Dad and I played tennis. Sadly the mini-holiday was drawing to an end, and after a yummy lunch we got to packing our cars and heading home. We bid each other big farewells and thank-you’s, as it was an awesome weekend. For both Ryan and I it was a landmark weekend as for both of us it was our first holiday away with a friend; I’m hoping Ryan and I proved to our mommies and daddies that they should do more of this!

Till next week.

Love

Jarrod
